Tackling childhood obesity is the governments ‘prime objective’ and the national target ‘To halt, by 2010, the year on year increase in obesity among children under 11 in the context of a broader strategy to tackle obesity in the population as a whole’ has been set by the government in the Choosing Health White Paper 2004.

Quality Early Years is paramount for the building blocks to a healthy, active adulthood.
Parents and carers are primarily responsible for providing a foundation for their childs’ future. A healthy lifestyle requires awareness and action, two criteria not always available at home.
Combining and applying good nutritional awareness with an active lifestyle are vital to obesity prevention and management.

Making physical education available to early years foundation stage children is not only addressing the nationwide problem of under exercising, it’s also an opportunity to educate parents and carers in continuing activities at home with their children.

KO Sport are challenging this problem by providing fun, active and educational sporting activities to take place at schools, children’s centres and nurseries through a series of classes to run through school term time and/or during school holidays.

The sessions, which last between 30 and 60mins dependant upon age groups (optimum concentration times for age groups), will encourage participants (children involving parents/carers if present) to learn and develop a basic understanding of:

- team work
- awareness of environment
- listening to and understanding instructions
- development of gross motor skills
- development of self-confidence
- walking
- running
- stopping and starting
- kicking, dribbling and stopping a ball (ball control)
- bouncing a ball
- accuracy
- balancing
- changing pace and direction
- using and learning about different parts of body to achieve the goal
- watching and copying
- re-enforcing and solidifying learnt skills
- using imagination
- concept of winning and taking part
- sense of personal achievement
- decision making
- protection
- language development (storytelling and acting games)
- improving social skills (team work, taking turns)

Our football related classes capture the imagination of the participants as we lead them through a series of skills and techniques which have been incorporated into stories with characters and adventures.

We believe that this approach encourages more children at foundation stage to want to take part in physical education and ensures their early experience of sport is positive and fun. This should instil a good basis for future activities and is paramount in contributing to the embedding of sport as a lifelong, fun experience.

As part of our sessions we provide activity or information sheets for each participant with subjects ranging from nutritional advice (5-a-day fridge chart) to colouring or spot the difference activity sheets for them to take home. All handouts have a “sporty” or healthy theme and encourage the children to take what they’ve learnt home to share with their parents/carers and hopefully encourage a continuation from the session.

Each child also has a record of achievement which charts their progress throughout the sessions and is presented to them at the end of the course as a reward for participation and a tangible achievement to take home.
